Fire!

As we were heading back from our elementary principals retreat at Sqaw Valley California, we saw a plume of smoke up ahead as we approached Reno. As we got closer, we noticed a small brush fire off the left hand side of the freeway. It had just started and was about the size of a football field. We noticed on the other side of the freeway a small firehouse with the fire engine sitting outside the door? We thought it was funny the fire engine wasn't over there putting out the fire. When we got home about 1/2 hour later, there was a large cloud of smoke from the area and several people were standing outside the apartments watching it. Now I have a new appreciation for the saying, "It spread like wild fire."

The houses up on the hills, just west of us, were scarily close to the fire.

This is the view a few blocks west of our apartments.

There were no notifications to evacuate areas, but I would have been tempted if I was living here!

This was taken with my PDA as I stood on the street outside our apartments. It is hard to see the row of flames coming our direction in the center of the picture, but it was very clear to the naked eye.

It was pretty spectacular after the sun set. Our apartments are in the lights that run off to the top right of the picture. About 5000 acres were burned.

Hot August Nights

You've seen it on TV, and yep, it's for real:-)

For the last four evenings, you could watch about a 2 hour parade of classic cars, muscle cars, and hot rods cruising through the middel of town.

Here's the whole family at the park where we dropped Alan and Travis to make the hour river float back into town.

We caught the trapeze act at Circus Circus.

And another "Hot August Nights" come to an end:-)
